Facebook

Facebook’s Zuckerberg sets a strict plan for himself every year.

In 2010, it was to learn Mandarin.

In 2011, it was to only eat animals which were killed by himself.

In 2013, it was to meet a new person outside Facebook everyday.

In 2015, it was to read a new book every two weeks.

What’s common in all these plans is that he did them all.

And it’s not out of some extraordinary ability that he has over the rest human beings. The only trick in it is just merciless time management and self-discipline.

Once you know this, you understand that it’s all just natural for him to have built such a giant company in such an young age.

Most of times we invent new things to make our life easier.

For example all the shopping APPs and news APPs that we use today.

But usually those inventions develop into traps.

We get addicted to them and spend more and more time in them.

We thought they were going to make us happier.

But they didn't.

They brought more anxiety into our life. Much more.

Some people grow tired of development because of this and propose that we abandon all technologies.

However, this is not development's fault.

What's wrong is our human nature.

We tend to lose control of ourselves and our time.

And that is why time management is so important.

This ability alone is enough to distinguish those who are extraordinary from the others.

And the very core of time management is self-discipline.

Psychologists have concluded that:

The early stage of self-discipline is exciting.

The middle stage is painful.

But the final stage is blissful.

This is just like a popular saying here in China:

Today is torturous. Tomorrow is worse. The day after tomorrow is wonderful. But most people will give up tomorrow night.

Self-discipline is the same. Most people only make it to the middle stage and think that torture is all you can find in it.

But the truth is once you enter the final stage you’ll feel a kind of mental freedom that you’ve never felt before.

However, it’s not easy to make it through the middle stage.

But it’s not that difficult, either. It’s just that too many of us have been making effort on the wrong direction.

The real self-discipline, the kind that is practical, requires method, not persistence.

It’s just like that someone who is doing really successfully in his career does not rely on the speed he finishes every move but on the ability to optimize procedures and to integrate resources.

What you can do in any given time is finite.

Only by taking one step at a time can you ensure that you don’t consume too much unnecessary willpower. Only by allocate appropriate time for every little goal can you manage your own time in the greater picture.

“I’m gonna do this today.” is not a plan. “I’m gonna finish this between 9:00 and 10:00 today.” is.

“I’m gonna lose some weight.” is not a plan. “From now on I’ll eat 2 eggs, no fried food and only drink bubble tea if it’s without sugar for 3 months.” is.

Only by making your plan explicit enough can you carry them out.

Only by making your life explicit enough can you really enjoy it.
